Why throw paper away? Put old newspaper and other paper to good use making it into attractive and functional things around the house. You can even make it into a house.

Author: Jim Sutton

Everyone knows that paper is often recycled, and has been for many years. Paper can be reused in several ways. Tightly rolled newspaper is sometimes used to make sturdy legs on small stools. And layered paper has been pressed into service (literally) for centuries as table tops and many other furniture products. Even more often, used paper is simply added to new wood-based or cotton-based pulp to make new paper products such as newsprint, cardboard or other fiber board.

But did you know that paper can be recycled right in your own home — transformed into new and useful goods? Truly functional items such as wastebaskets, decorative bowls and even tables can be made from old newspaper, for example.

You may use old paper as pulp or as layers (as in paper mache) to make items that are both functional and pleasing to the eye. Both of these paper construction methods require water and the addition of a binding agent (usually a simple starch, such as ordinary white flour). The pulp can be pressed into a mold or even shaped by hand (much as a clay) to create a desired form. Layered paper is built up, a layer at a time, creating a hollow shell on a mold (such as a plastic bowl or box).

I’ve tried out several types of home-based construction using old newspaper and other used paper. Sometimes I add other materials in addition to the paper, such as thin sticks of bamboo or wood, to help reinforce an overall structure. I built a small table in this way, and also a large freestanding sculpture. But other items, such as a wastepaper basket made from old newspapers, did not require additional support.

Paper is also been used in recent decades as an experimental construction agent in homebuilding. When used properly, and when protected from moisture (such as rain, snow and damp soil), “papercrete,” as it is often called, has already proven to be an effective building material. Most of the strength, of course, comes from the addition of cement and other agents, such as sand. But paper often makes up more than 50% of the papercrete blocks or bricks, as well as the mortar. In fact, an acceptable ratio of paper to Portland cement and sand (or pumice, if readily available) runs about 60% to 20% each of the cement and sand.

Paper used in this fashion can be used as supporting walls, in much the same way as regular cement or adobe blocks would be used. With a fire-safe ratio (such as the 60-20-20 mentioned) papercrete (or fibrous concrete, as it is also called) is considered to be much more environmentally friendly, as well as an excellent insulating material for the home.

Learning to build with paper is a relatively inexpensive and often rewarding exercise in practical recycling. Such experiments can make excellent projects for children of all ages in classroom or summer camp settings. Family-centered projects are not a bad idea, either. Building with paper can be turned into a profitable pastime for both artists and artisans who become skilled at producing beautiful and/or useful products right in the home.

Want to know more? You can use the Internet to research the subject and related topics. You can start your search by looking at my own projects that have been posted to the web. You can see all three of my paper construction experiments at http://www.jimsgraphix.com/recycle/recycle.htm.
Once you know what a blog is, you may ask: How does this help my business? How does it help me to stand out?

1. Team Communication. Companies use blogs internally to communicate project status to stakeholders and managers. It beats clogging everybody’s email with mass broadcasts. It allows these missives to be archived, indexed and easily searched.

2. Enrich Your Clients. You can easily link to articles and resources relevant to your readers and their needs. You can more easily attract experts to provide value-added content to your audience.

3. Get to Know Your Customer. Nobody buys from someone they do not know. Blogging allows you to demonstrate your expertise and point-of-view quickly and easily. In addition, blogs allow the customers to receive your updates in the format they choose.

4. Collaborate. You can create your own marketing buzz to drive attention and buyers to your products and services. Some companies use internal blogs to report on projects or to track work groups distributed around the world.

5. Research and Development. Weblogs are the perfect forum to test out new ideas and receive instant feedback. You can allow others to see how you develop your products and services, and at the same time, they can tell you how best to serve them.

6. Go Global. Blogs, like other online media, allow you to take your business and ideas to a global market. Translation services are getting better every day, allowing more people to read online content in different languages.

7. Hidden Entrance to the Press. Journalists are busier than ever and blogs provide a virtual directory of pundits on any topic. You and your company can be the content expert they are looking for. Furthermore, if your company is talked about in the blogosphere it could end up using that exposure as a back door to the press.

8. Get Published. Publishers are turning to blogs to find new writing talent. Blogs can give a publisher a taste of your writing style as well as a sample of your depth of knowledge. Content specific blogs show a commitment to a certain topic or subject matter.

9. Write your book. Let your readers help you write your latest book or article. Post chapters or ideas, then let readers help you in researching, testing and suggesting ideas. Or, use a blog after your book is published to update the material or to answer questions from readers.

10. Success Stories. Invite clients to blog about their successes with your products and services – it is like a living testimonial that never ends. As clients share their experiences, your prospects can see first-hand how you can help them, too.

Comprising of 10 provinces and three territories, Canada is the second largest country with 7% of the world land mass. Extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and northward into the Arctic Ocean, Canada shares land borders with the United States to the south and with the US state of Alaska to the northwest.

Canada is a constitutional monarchy with Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada as head of state, and a parliamentary democracy with a federal system of parliamentary government.

Canada is a bilingual and multicultural country with English and French as official language. Non-official languages are important in Canada, with 5,202,245 people listing one as a first language. Some significant non-official first languages include Chinese, Italian, German, and Punjabi.

Canada is an ethnically diverse nation. According to the 2001 census, it has 34 ethnic groups with at least one hundred thousand members each. The largest ethnic group is “Canadian” (39.4%), followed by English (20.2%), French (15.8%), Scottish (14.0%), Irish (12.9%), German (9.3%), Italian (4.3%), Chinese (3.7%), Ukrainian (3.6%) and First Nations (3.4%).

Canada is one of the world’s wealthiest nations with a high per capita income, a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Group Eight (G8). Canada is a free market with slight government intervention, much less than most of the European countries.

Canadians adhere to a wide variety of religions, as people in Canada have the freedom of religion as one of their rights. According to 2001 census, 77.1% of Canadians identified as being Christians; of this, Catholics make up the largest group (43.6% of Canadians).

In Canada, the provinces and territories are responsible for education; thus Canada has no national department of education. The mandatory school age varies across Canada but generally ranges between the ages of 5-7 to 16-18,

Canadian culture has historically been heavily influenced by British, French and aboriginal culture and traditions, and over time has been greatly influenced by American culture because of the proximity between the two countries. Canadian culture has also been greatly influenced by more recent immigration of people from all over the world.

Canadian official national sports are ice hockey (ice hockey) and lacrosse (summer). Hockey is the national pass-time and also the most watched sport in the country. After hockey, other popular watched sports include Canadian football and curling.

Author: Joe Shaw

Trade shows can be absolutely essential to a business and the life blood– supplying new customers and sales to your bottom line. Though you may present your trade show exhibits at an industry trade show only a few times per year, tradeshows are a great opportunity to make new prospects, reconnect with current customers and present your products and services to other trade show attendees as well as see what the competition is up to — all in one convenient location. Trade shows can be a concentrated dose of marketing feedback and valuable lessons. Pay attention to what your potential tradeshow booth visitors are saying. You can learn a great deal in short order by attending and displaying your tradeshow booth displays at trade shows. Making adjustments accordingly to your marketing message can save you months and a considerable amount of money in the long run.

To some presenters, trade shows are a dreaded obligation resulting in aching feet and tired sales staff for those that must work the exhibit booths, but those who feel this way just don’t see the opportunity at hand. A tradeshow booth is one of the few marketing opportunities that is a two way street. Rarely anymore do we have a chance to look into the eyes of potential customers in such a non-threatening, open environment. Sure the internet is supposedly a two-way communication tool — connecting us directly with our consumers, but only in a tradeshow booth do you find a pre-qualified, interested observer willing to talk with you and give you their valuable opinion. They paid to be there! This is priceless! They have not yet made a commitment. They have not walked into your store or show room. They are merely visiting your portable trade show exhibit, but they are a wealth of knowledge and information.

Often it is a challenge to quantify the return on investment of your marketing message of your tradeshow booth design. But everyone else in the industry has exhibit displays there at the big industry trade show…you can’t not be seen there, lest you risk being left behind in the proverbial dust. So you might as well get the most information from potential customers, and generate as much good will and as many leads as possible while you are attending your next tradeshow.

S2imaging is the expert supplier of trade show graphics, tradeshow booth design and small to medium sized tradeshow booths and exhibit displays. S2 imaging ships everything from 20 x 20ft trade show exhibits to portable trade show exhibit pop up display stands, shipping crates and literature racks all across the nation. Orders can be quickly placed from their easy to navigate website at www.s2imaging.com

Fortunately S2imaging has some of the best pricing in the industry on vinyl banners, trade show displays and portable trade show booths so making adjustments to your messaging or even completely redressing your trade show display can be an affordable alternative.

If you are looking for a different angle to your craft business or hobby, why not try face painting? Kids will love you!

Most kids love to have their face painted, it makes them feel special and unique at the party, and you can do this!.. Most craft stores as well as costume stores carry the face painting kits to get you started.

Do you want to be the star of your kids next birthday party? … or special event?.. Learn to do this, and word will get around quickly. All you need is practice and patience, especially with children. You have to keep designs for children very simple, stick to balloons, stars, flowers, fish, rainbows, make sure to use bright colors… because their sitting still time, is very limited!.. especially when they are already pumped up at a birthday party!

This would make a great birthday party activity, and with parents being so busy these days, this would help them out, and you can make this into a business.

The best way is to practice simple designs on paper. Draw a basic head shape on paper with the nose and eyes, and start playing around with colored pencils to start with. Your success will depend on how quickly you can draw these with the face paint, and what age group of children you are dealing with. Obviously a 4 year old is not going to sit for very long, you may be trying to paint with a squirming kid!.

Once you feel comfortable, practice with the paints on your own children, or neighbors or relatives, until you feel comfortable. You can save you masterpieces of art for the older kids!… stick with bright colorful simple designs for the younger ones.

Try hooking up with birthday party organizers, and see if you could do this as a business, if you like it, and you do enough parties, you will get known quite quickly. Its also a great idea, if you can come up with lots of different designs, so that each child feels theirs is special. Basically if there are 10 kids at the party, try and come up with 10 different designs ahead of time and you will be the star of the show!
